Electrical Safety Certificate Manchester
An Electrical Safety Certificate is the formal document that confirms electrical work has been carried out safely and in compliance with BS 7671 wiring regulations. There are two main types: an Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) for new installations and major alterations, and a Minor Works Certificate for smaller additions to existing circuits. Both are legal requirements under Part P Building Regulations and essential documents for insurance compliance, property sales and renewable energy system certification.
Manchester Renewables issues Electrical Installation Certificates and Minor Works Certificates for all types of renewable energy electrical work across Greater Manchester. Whether you need certification for a new solar PV installation, a battery storage circuit, a consumer unit upgrade or any other notifiable electrical work, our NIC/EIC Approved electricians carry out thorough testing and issue the appropriate certificate with automatic Building Control notification. We also provide retrospective testing and certification for existing installations that were completed without proper documentation.
What Is Included?
Full Circuit Testing
Full testing of all relevant circuits using calibrated instruments. This includes continuity testing, insulation resistance, polarity verification, earth fault loop impedance and RCD trip time testing as required by BS 7671.
Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC)
The EIC documents the design, construction and inspection of new electrical work. It includes circuit details, test results, and confirmation that the installation complies with BS 7671. Required for all new circuits including solar PV and battery storage installations.
Minor Works Certificate
For smaller additions or alterations to existing circuits that do not require a new circuit, such as adding a socket to an existing ring or replacing a light fitting. Includes test results and compliance confirmation.
Building Control Notification
All notifiable electrical work is automatically reported to Manchester Building Control through our NIC/EIC Competent Person Scheme registration. You receive a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate as proof.
Schedule of Test Results
A detailed schedule recording every test measurement taken during the inspection. This document forms part of the EIC and provides a baseline for future comparison during periodic inspections (EICRs).
Part P Building Regulations — Electrical Safety in Dwellings: Mandatory certification for all notifiable electrical work
Part P of the Building Regulations (England and Wales) requires that certain types of electrical work in dwellings are either carried out by an electrician registered with a Competent Person Scheme (such as NIC/EIC) or inspected and approved by Building Control. Notifiable work includes all new circuits, consumer unit replacements, and any electrical work in bathrooms or outdoors. Solar PV and battery storage installations all require new circuits and are therefore notifiable. Failure to obtain proper certification is a criminal offence and can result in fines, remedial work orders and serious complications when selling the property.
Why It Matters
- Electrical work without proper certification violates Part P Building Regulations and can result in enforcement action
- Home insurance policies may be invalidated if notifiable electrical work was not properly certified
- Conveyancing solicitors now routinely request electrical certificates during property sales — missing documents delay or collapse sales
- Solar PV systems require a valid EIC as part of the MCS certification process needed for Smart Export Guarantee eligibility
Cost Guidance
An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) for a standard domestic solar PV installation costs between £100 and £200 when issued as part of the installation work. For retrospective testing and certification of existing installations that lack documentation, costs range from £150 to £350 depending on the number of circuits and complexity. A Minor Works Certificate typically costs £60 to £120. These costs include all testing, the certificate itself and Building Control notification. For commercial installations, EIC costs start from £250 and vary with system size.
