Wigan & Leigh College — 330 kW Commercial Solar Installation
Flat-roof commercial solar PV, three-zone east-west layout, 470W Aiko panels — installed by Manchester Renewables.
Manchester Renewables installed a 330 kW commercial flat-roof solar PV system at Wigan & Leigh College — a further-education site — with the array spread across three zones of the main building roof.
The build uses 470W Aiko panels on an east-west ballasted tray system with weighted base feet, feeding string inverters via DC isolators with cabling dressed under trunking. The video was filmed during the finishing-off phase, with the team replacing a small number of panels lost to crane-lift breakages.

We're at Wigan and Leigh College today, just finishing off one of our installs. We've done 330 kilowatts on the main school roof here. As you can see, that's just over 640 Aiko 470W panels, so we've got our tray on the big feet, all the cables dressed in lovely straight runs feeding the string inverters down to DC isolators underneath, underneath the trunking. We've just got to finish the lid on the trunking. As you can see, we've fitted all the panels east-west on an install frame, hopefully dressed perfectly down the tray. So have a quick walk around, a quick show of what we've been up to. We've got three sections of the roof — this is zone three, there's just over 200 panels on this zone, east-west like I say, everything's in, looking great, bit of lid to finish off on the tray there, just getting the last pieces now, finishing off. So a quick walk across — we'll show you this other side of the roof. We've used an Aiko 470W panel on here. Here's the team finishing off the trunking lids — we had a few panel breakages on the crane lift, so we've just got to replace a few. Going round finishing the last pieces now. Here we go, this is the cluster zone, the middle part of the roof, still got some lids to go on here, lids getting finished off there, it's been set up here cutting the lid, got panels up there, all the way down here, this zone across here, zone one. So yeah, that's it really, just having a show.

Common Questions
Solar for colleges, schools and public-sector sites
Flat-roof commercial solar PV gives education and public-sector sites a long-running, low-maintenance way to offset daytime electricity demand — the array sits unobtrusively above the roofline and the day-to-day operation of the building is uninterrupted. Manchester Renewables installs and aftercare-supports projects of this scale across Greater Manchester and the wider North West. See Commercial Solar Panels and Flat Roof Solar Panels for more on how the system is specified.
